Saskatchewan after harvest

06/19/2007: Canadian yield prognoses started in CW 24

Cool and wet weather delayed the sowing of spring cereals in the northern part of Alberta. In Camrose-Lloydminster, for example, sowing was delayed by 1 to 2 weeks if compared with the previous years. In Saskatchewan farmers completed the cereal sowings in time. Despite low amounts of rainfall since the beginning of April, the top soil moisture was still sufficient for guaranteeing an early emergence of the crops. Therefore IntelCrop could provide first yield prognoses in CW 24.

For both provinces yields for spring barley and spring wheat is estimated by IntelCrop. Alberta and Saskatchewan count for about 85% of the Canadian cultivated area of spring barley and approximately 80% of the spring wheat area. In 2006 prognoses of IntelCrop achieved particularly high accuracies, both on county as well as on province level.

09/03/2006: Lightly above-average yield potential in Saskatchewan and Alberta

In spring, at the beginning of the campaign, heavy rainfall and mild temperatures in Alberta and Saskatchewan had been beneficial to a very good yield development. In July however, important agricultural areas suffered from dryness and heat.

On the satellite image of cw 35 the consequences of this meteorological situation are shown by the yellow and orange colouring, most of all in the southern part, but also in the central areas of the provinces. Beside the under average state of the plants due to the dry and hot weather, the satellite image reflects the fact that a premature physiological maturation of spring crops is well under way.

According to IntelCrop’s estimations yield potentials of spring barley and spring wheat are under last year’s level, but above the 10-year’s average. For spring wheat 2,8 t/ha are expected in Alberta and 2,1 t/ha in Saskatchewan. For spring barley 3,2 t/ha are forecasted for Alberta and 26 t/ha for Saskatchewan.

In a manner of speaking, both provinces represent Canada’s granary, where. 3,7 million ha spring barley and over 6 million ha spring wheat are totally cultivated (which respectively represents 90 % and 75 % of the total Canadian cultivated area of spring barley and spring wheat).

06/21/2006: Positive start to the 2006 cropping season in Canada

Summer barley has emerged in the cultivation regions of Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada.

More than 50 % of the crops are tillering. The growing conditions are favourable. Rainfall and sufficient subsoil moisture take care for a fast development of the barley plants. The season start in the major cropping districts of Canada which are often threatened by droughts promises to end up with high yields in 2006.
