06/19/2007: Harvest prospects of spring barley to be good for Storströms Amt and average for Denmark

Zoom (113KB)
Denmark cw 24 2007

In Denmark condition of spring barley crops differs between those cultivated on the mainland in the west and those growing in the eastern Storströms Amt region, with Lolland being a part of it.

As being apparent on the satellite image of calendar week 24, barley crops in Lolland have recovered faster from dryness in April. Crops in this part of the country gained from rainfall in May which was almost twice as much as usually recorded in this month, whereas on the mainland precipitation only reached amounts slightly higher than the monthly long-term average.

Yield of spring barley in the region of Storströms Amt is estimated by our prognosis model to be above average in 2007. Recent yield forecasts for the whole country of Denmark only reach an average level. Storströms Amt, including the island of Lolland, is known for having the largest cultivation area and highest yields of spring barley in Denmark.

05/24/2006: Regions with late vegetation development

Zoom (45KB)
Denmark cw 20 2006

Regions in Denmark where start of the vegetation period and the planting of spring crops were late appear yellow and orange on the satellite image as at 21.05.2006. The Lolland Island (on the right bottom of the image) is mostly hit by this situation.

Cold weather and heavy rain at the beginning of April led to a late sowing of spring barley. This crop represents an area of 70.000 ha there. With 6,5 t/ha Lolland, also called the South Seas' Island of Denmark, reaches by far the highest yield level of all Denmark's cultural areas.
